Australian Native Trees course

DESCRIPTION

Learn to identify and cultivate trees that are indigenous to Australia.

This course first teaches you about different types of Australian flora, plant identification, information sources, planting, feeding, soils, pests and diseases, watering, propagation and transplanting. The remaining lessons then deal with selected varieties of trees, windbreak planting, agroforestry, tree maintenance and tree selection

LESSON STRUCTURE

There are eight lessons in this course:

1. Introduction
2. Review of the system of plant identification, general characteristics of native trees, information contacts (eg: nurseries, seed, clubs)
3. Culture
4. Planting, Establishing techniques, Soils, Feeding, Watering, Pest and Disease control
5. Propagation
6. Seed Propagation, Propagation of Eucalypts and Acacias, How To Collect Native Tree, Seed, How To Germinate Native Tree and Shrub Seed
7. Important groups of native trees (excluding Eucalypts)
8. Review of more than 100 genera, special study of the Acacias.
9. More Important Groups
10. Eucalyptus, Other particularly hardy and fast growing genera, Diagnosing Tree Problems, Introduction to Tree Surgery
11. Other Varieties
12. Native Conifers, Rainforest Trees
13. Making The Best Use of Native Trees
14. Landscape applications, Biological Control of Pest and Disease, Cut Flowers, Firewood, Timber
15. Special Assignment (on one selected plant or group).

Each lesson culminates in an assignment which is submitted to the school, marked by the school's tutors and returned to you with any relevant suggestions, comments, and if necessary, extra reading.
